What is Emergency Management?

From a business organisation's point of view, Emergency Management is an organisational function in charge of building workplace policies to reduce a company's vulnerabilities to various hazards and dangers. The role of emergency managers is to teach everybody in their organization how to handle multiple emergencies and monitor different workplace situations that could be a cause of hazards.

What is Emergency Management?

Four Stages of Emergency Management

Emergency management can be modified depending on the situation. Every organisation will include these four emergency management stages, namely:

Mitigation: Mitigation refers to analysing all the risks and hazard factors within the workplace to eliminate the possible risks. It also includes making sure that all the physical requirements of the workplace are up to standards and have passed the various government regulations and laws. A few examples of mitigation are investing in firefighting & fire prevention equipment, ensuring that all fire escapes are approachable, and the engineers regularly check the building's foundation.

Preparedness: The next step requires constant planning, organising, and educating workers who will lead emergency cases. This includes training all staff on fundamentals to advanced first aid and basic life support practices. For example, Early Stabilization of people who are majorly injured or hurt and keeping everybody within the calm and collected environment. Preparedness also includes being in contact with various medical or healthcare facilities dedicated to your organisation during emergencies.

Response:  A response will consist of the mobilisation of the key personnel who are asked to lead specific troubles. A company may have assigned several response teams to teach various types of emergencies. The response stage also involves focus emergency services such as ambulance crews and paramedics for difficult situations. For example, a factory worker got injured from a machine malfunction. Emergency responders within the organisation will perform Wound Closure procedures and keep the sufferer stable until an ambulance arrives. Without Early Stabilisation, the wounded patient may suffer from trauma, which may lead to panic and even that person's death.

Recovery: The final stage of Emergency Management is recovery. Recovery deals with problems and decisions after facing an emergency. As with the above example of the wounded patient, recovery will require all the decisions focusing on that employee after he has been stabilised at the hospital. This will include decisions on whether to compensate him for the misfortune and whether to maintain his position within the company or move him to another less uncertain position.
